Meet Our East Croydon Students and Their Favourite Paintings

There's something rather lovely about asking artists what moves them. Here at our East Croydon studio, tucked away from the bustle of the high street, we've been chatting with our students about the paintings that first made them want to pick up a brush — or in some cases, a stick of oil pastel or a pencil.

What strikes us most is the sheer variety. Our 14-week courses bring together people from all corners of South London, each carrying different visual memories, different longings to create.

The Impressionists Still Reign

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Monet appears again and again in conversation. Sarah, who joined us last autumn for watercolours, speaks dreamily about seeing 'Water Lilies' at the National Gallery. "I just stood there thinking: that's water, that's light, that's air — all made from paint," she says. "I wanted to understand how he did it, even just a fraction."

It's this curiosity that we try to nurture across our drawing, oil pastel, watercolour and acrylic classes. Not copying the masters — goodness, no — but understanding what made their work sing, then finding your own voice within the materials.

The Unexpected Favourites

Then there's James, a regular at our Thursday evening sessions, who's obsessed with Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks'. "It's the loneliness that gets me," he admits. "But also the way the light falls through that diner window. I'm working on capturing that kind of artificial light in acrylics now."

Margaret, meanwhile, adores Paula Rego's strange, narrative paintings. "They're unsettling and honest," she tells us during a tea break. "I love how she wasn't afraid to be uncomfortable." Margaret's currently exploring oil pastels — their rich, dense colours seem perfect for the bold marks she's after.

Closer to Home

Some students find their inspiration on our very doorstep. "I love those old Pissarro paintings of Norwood and Crystal Palace," says David, who cycles to class from South Norwood. "He painted right here, our bit of London. Makes me see the trees on the way to the studio differently."

This is what we adore about teaching here in East Croydon. Our students aren't just learning techniques over 14 weeks — they're developing an artist's way of seeing. The light through a bus window. The particular blue of an October afternoon. The way watercolour blooms differently on damp paper than dry.

Your Turn to Discover

You don't need a favourite painting to start with us. You don't need to have drawn since school, or ever mixed a colour, or know your sable from your synthetic brushes. You just need a bit of curiosity and a willingness to surprise yourself.

Our beginner and improver courses run for 14 weeks, giving you proper time to explore drawing, oil pastels, watercolours and acrylics. We'll introduce you to techniques, yes, but more importantly, we'll help you discover what you love to paint — and perhaps, along the way, which paintings made by others make your heart sing.

Classes run throughout the year here in East Croydon, and we'd be delighted to hear from you. Do get in touch to enquire about our next course. Who knows? Perhaps in a few months, you'll be the one telling us about the painting that changed everything.
